The Proximity of Compassion: A Message (07/03/'24)

The Proximity of Compassion: A Message Introduction: Dear Friends, Today, I want to share a profound reflection on the proximity of compassion and the essence of our shared humanity. In our busy lives, it's easy to overlook the needs of those around us, especially those who are struggling. Yet, we live just a heartbeat away from those whose lives have been unraveled, the homeless, the broken, and the forgotten. The truth of our existence is intertwined with theirs, for it is in the shelter of each other that we find our true home. The Call to Compassion: We often abandon those who stumble, casting them aside as proof of their guilt and evidence of their failures. But the words of the Teacher, Jesus, echo through the ages: "Practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice." (Matthew 23:3-6, Mark 12:37b-39, Luke 20:46, 11:46,52; John 13:16-17). This stark reminder exposes the hypocrisy of the self-righteous, whose words are a hollow echo in the chambers of their actions. Bridging the Gap: We are called to look beyond the facade, to see the humanity in each face, and to extend our hearts and hands to those in need. The distance between us is less than ten minutes, a fleeting span of time that separates indifference from compassion, and condemnation from understanding. It is our duty to bridge this gap by embodying the teachings of love and compassion. Living the Teachings: In the shelter of each other, we find the essence of our humanity. Let us not be blinded by the judgments we pass but embrace the truth that lies in our shared vulnerability. To practice the teachings of love and to live out the commandments of compassion is to bridge the gap between word and deed. Conclusion: For in every soul, there is a story and a lesson to be learned. It is in the act of reaching out and extending grace and mercy that we fulfill the true meaning of our existence. Let us stand together, in the shelter of each other, living out the truth that we preach and embodying the love that transcends all boundaries. Let us remember that the proximity of compassion is just a heartbeat away. Let us close that gap with acts of kindness, understanding, and unwavering support for one another. Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to see beyond our prejudices and judgments. Open our hearts to the needs of those around us and grant us the courage to practice what we preach. May we be vessels of Your love and compassion, bridging the gaps that divide us. In Your name, we pray. Amen. Thank you, and may God bless you all. Pastor Steven G. Lee (July 3, 2024)
