Title: Divine Perspectives: External and Internal Views in Religion and Spirituality (04/25/'24) -Statement

Title: Divine Perspectives: External and Internal Views in Religion and Spirituality The fundamental difference in these perspectives—where God is perceived as external in religion and internal in spirituality—stems from different conceptual frameworks about the divine, the nature of the self, and the relationship between them. Here are some key aspects that contribute to this difference: Theological Foundations: Religion: Many religions are based on theistic beliefs where God is seen as a distinct, sovereign entity that exists apart from humans. This separation between God and humans is fundamental in religions like Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, where God is often perceived as a creator, ruler, and judge who is transcendent and omnipotent. Spirituality: Spirituality often embraces a more pantheistic or panentheistic view where God or divinity permeates all things and is inseparable from the universe, including the self. Here, God is not a distinct external entity but an inherent presence that resides within each person and connects all forms of life. Philosophical Influences: Religion: Influenced by dualistic philosophies which maintain a clear distinction between the divine and the mundane, the sacred and the profane. This dualism reinforces the notion of God as being outside of and beyond the human experience. Spirituality: Often influenced by non-dualistic philosophies found in Eastern religions and New Age thought, which see the divine as present in everything and advocate for a more integrated view of the universe. In this perspective, the divine is something to be experienced within oneself as part of a universal whole. Purpose and Path of the Individual: Religion: The external view of God aligns with the religious goals of worship, obedience, and sometimes fear or reverence towards a supreme being. The path often involves adhering to divine commands and seeking God's favor or avoiding divine wrath. Spirituality: The internal view encourages individuals to explore their own divine nature and seek personal enlightenment or self-realization. The journey is more about inner transformation and direct personal experience of the divine. Cultural and Historical Contexts: Religion: Shaped by historical narratives, cultural contexts, and institutional needs, the external view of God serves to unify communities under common beliefs and leadership, establishing clear guidelines and structures. Spirituality: Often emerges from a blend of diverse cultural influences and individualistic societies where personal freedom and self-expression are valued. This context fosters an internal, personal exploration of divinity. These perspectives are not mutually exclusive and can overlap in the experiences of many people who integrate elements of both in their personal beliefs and practices. Each framework offers a different approach to understanding existence, purpose, and the nature of divinity, reflecting the varied ways humans relate to the concept of the sacred. Pastor Steven G.
