Subject: Reflections on Psalm 73:5-10 in Today's Society (05/02/'24) -Message

Subject: Reflections on Psalm 73:5-10 in Today's Society Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some thoughts on how the themes highlighted in Psalm 73:5-10 can resonate deeply in today's society, particularly concerning the dynamics of power, influence, and moral integrity. Prosperity and Ease Leading to Arrogance: In the contemporary scene, whether in business, politics, or entertainment, highly successful individuals or groups sometimes seem immune to the daily challenges faced by most people. This disparity can foster a sense of entitlement or arrogance, giving rise to a mindset where they perceive themselves as above the standard norms and rules that govern the majority. Visibility and Influence of the Powerful: Reflecting the biblical imagery of pride and violence being worn like a necklace and a robe, today's influential figures often overtly display their status and power. This is evident through their luxurious lifestyles, aggressive business practices, or even in their apparent ability to evade consequences. Moral and Ethical Blindness: With significant power and influence comes the risk of moral and ethical desensitization. The powerful may scoff at regulations and norms, wield their platforms to propagate divisive or harmful ideologies, and feel sufficiently invincible to threaten or belittle those who oppose them. Global Reach and Communication: In our digital age, the voices of influential individuals can "roam the earth" via social media, news outlets, and other communication forms. Their ideas, whether beneficial or detrimental, have the power to impact vast audiences globally. Public Influence and Admiration: Despite any unethical behaviors or corrupt actions, many individuals continue to admire or follow these influential figures closely, "drinking deeply of their words." This admiration can stem from various factors, such as the charisma of the individual, the success they embody, or because their messages align with certain public beliefs or desires. In conclusion, Psalm 73:5-10 offers a critical view of how society often elevates and venerates individuals based on their success and power, regardless of their moral or ethical standings. It challenges us to reflect on our responses to such figures and to think critically about whom we choose to admire and follow. Moreover, it serves as a cautionary reminder about the corrupting effects of power and the importance of maintaining humility and ethical integrity, regardless of one's status in life. Thank you for taking the time to consider these reflections. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and engaging in further discussion. Pastor Steven G. Lee (May 2, 2024)
