The Integration of Scripture and Tradition in Orthodox Christian and Roman Catholic Theology (05/03/'24) -Vewpoint

The Integration of Scripture and Tradition in Orthodox Christian and Roman Catholic Theology Both the Orthodox Christian Church and the Roman Catholic Church hold that the authority of the Bible is integrated within a broader framework that includes both Scripture and Tradition. In both traditions, Tradition includes the writings of the Church Fathers, liturgical texts, and the decisions of the ecumenical councils, among other elements. These traditions believe that Scripture and Tradition together convey the faith and teachings of the Church. The main difference between the two in their approach to tradition and scripture is somewhat nuanced. The Orthodox Church typically emphasizes that Scripture is part of Tradition and inseparable from it, viewing Tradition as the life of the Church itself through the Holy Spirit. Roman Catholics, meanwhile, often discuss Scripture and Tradition as two distinct sources of revelation that complement each other, guided by the teaching authority of the Church, known as the Magisterium.
