Subject: Embodying Christ's Teachings through Compassion and Outreach
Dear Friends and Family,
I hope this message finds you well. Today, I want to share some reflections on the transformative approach that Christ exemplified, which stands in contrast to the competitive nature often seen in our societal systems. Christ's method wasn’t about rising above others through competition, but rather about elevating those around Him through acts of kindness and support.
In His words, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near," we are called not just to prepare for a future promise but to actively participate in creating a compassionate community here and now (Matthew 3:2, 4:17; Mark 1:15). This is about turning away from self-serving behaviors towards a life enriched with communal and spiritual engagements.
It's important to note that striving to be original in our following of Christ is far more valuable than merely succeeding in imitating Him. Christ Himself placed immense value on reaching out to those who are lost or forgotten. As He taught in Matthew 10:6, we are to "go rather to the lost sheep," focusing our efforts on those who are most in need of guidance and support.
Reflecting on this, a poignant reminder comes from the parable where Christ asks if a shepherd would not leave ninety-nine sheep in the hills to find the one that is lost (Matthew 18:12). This parable beautifully illustrates the priority of individual care and outreach in His teachings.
Moreover, a striking statistic brings this message closer to home: half of the homeless population consists of baptized Christians. This reveals a deep need for us to live out our faith through actions, particularly in supporting those among us who are struggling.
Let us be inspired to not only nurture our community but to extend our hands and hearts to those who are sidelined and suffering. In doing this, we truly walk in the footsteps of Christ.
With warmth and blessings,
Pastor Steven G. Lee (April 18, 2024)
