Subject: Honoring God Through Our Worship: A Call for Simplicity and Reverence in Church Music Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we gather in our sacred spaces to worship and glorify God, it is essential to reflect on the true purpose of our worship and the manner in which we conduct it. In the spirit of the Reformation led by John Calvin and John Knox, let us remember the foundational principles they championed—simplicity, sincerity, and scriptural fidelity in worship. John Calvin and John Knox advocated for a form of worship that was deeply reverent and focused on the Word of God. They cautioned against the use of elaborate music in church services, concerned that it might overshadow the message of the Scriptures and lead the congregation away from the solemn contemplation of God’s teachings. Their commitment was to ensure that every aspect of worship was directly supportive of edification through Scripture, and not merely appealing to the senses or emotions. In our modern context, where church music often resembles a concert or theatrical performance, it is worthwhile to pause and consider these reformers’ apprehensions. While music is a beautiful gift from God and a powerful medium for expression, our primary aim in worship should always be to glorify God and nurture our spiritual growth through His Word. Let us therefore strive to maintain a balance where music serves as a means to enhance our worship without becoming the focal point. May our songs reflect the depth of our faith and the truth of the gospel, rather than seeking to entertain or evoke emotional responses for their own sake. As we make choices about the kind of music we incorporate into our worship services, let us prioritize content that aligns with scriptural teachings, fosters a collective spirit, and keeps our hearts and minds focused on the transformative power of God’s Word. May our worship be a reflection of our reverence and love for the Lord, conducted in a manner that truly honors Him. In Christ’s love and service, Pastor Steven G. Lee (April 13, 2024)
