Subject: Reflections on Justice and Power (05/11/'24) -Message

Subject: Reflections on Justice and Power Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some thoughts that have been on my mind lately regarding justice and the dynamics of power in society. Blessings of Justice: The pursuit of justice and righteousness is often seen as a noble endeavor, an unwavering commitment to fairness and doing what is right. "Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times" (Ps 106:3). Ideological Influence: Ideologies aren't merely mistaken beliefs or illusions—they are systems that shape our understanding of reality and guide our actions. Thrasymachus on Power and Justice: Thrasymachus's definition of justice, as "the advantage of the stronger," holds that laws are passed by those in power for their benefit. They craft and enforce these laws to maintain control. Justice as a Tool of Power: This interpretation makes justice a tool that serves the interests of the powerful, reinforcing their dominance and protecting their position. Capitalism in Crisis: Capitalism, as a system, is currently under scrutiny. U.S. billionaires have expressed concerns about the sustainability of the system that enriched them, revealing their worries about the stability of their wealth. Laws Uphold Advantage: The ruling class often enforces laws that serve their own interests, contradicting the broader ideals of fairness and reinforcing their advantage. Obedience and Control: Justice is presented in a way that benefits those in power, while obedience is demanded of the masses to sustain this system. A Strained System: Although the structures of power may seem strong today, inequality and unrest are causing increasing strain on the foundations of this system. The Quest for True Justice: As more people seek justice and righteousness, they are starting to question the definitions shaped by those who command the system. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this. Do you see similar patterns in our current world, or do you have a different perspective? Best regards, Pastor Steven G. Lee (May 11, 2024)
