Statement: Contrasting Ballet and Korean Classical Dance (05/08/'24)

Statement: Contrasting Ballet and Korean Classical Dance Western Ballet: Ballet thrives on discipline, demanding intense training and physical refinement to achieve intricate, precise movements. It dominates various fields, including art, religion, politics, and education, often likened to training dogs, where unnatural standards are embedded. The art form emphasizes structure, sometimes feeling like a costly spectacle where precision overshadows personal expression. Korean Classical Dance: Korean dance embraces natural movement, allowing anyone to express joy and sorrow through body language. It doesn't rely on specialized techniques or conditioning; instead, it encourages dancers to balance on their heels and move fluidly with emotion. Contrast: Ballet’s rigid expectations can lead to conformity and pressure, demanding perfection and grandiose displays akin to fountains shooting into the sky. Korean dance, on the other hand, focuses on inclusivity, inviting all to dance with their hearts, faces, and natural gestures, free from the weight of perfection. Conclusion: This contrast highlights different paths for artistic expression: ballet prioritizes rigor and discipline, while Korean dance offers freedom and inclusivity. Finding the right path in art means embracing a form that heals, celebrates joy, and lets the spirit move uninhibitedly. Pastor Steven G. Lee (May 8, 2024)
