Redefining Our Approach to Homelessness: A Call to Action (04/03/'24) -Message

Redefining Our Approach to Homelessness: A Call to Action Hey everyone, Did you know that post-World War II America enjoyed a period of prosperity and housing affordability that kept homelessness relatively under wraps? This changed drastically in the 1980s, and understanding why is crucial if we're to address homelessness effectively today. The 1980s Shift: A Closer Look Deinstitutionalization: The move to deinstitutionalize the mentally ill, while well-intentioned, lacked adequate support for community integration, leading to increased homelessness. Policy Changes: The Reagan administration's budget cuts to social services, including housing subsidies, played a significant role in the homelessness crisis. Economic Transformations: Shifts in the economy led to job displacement, especially in manufacturing, pushing more people into homelessness. Divorce Rates: Rising divorce rates and the financial instability that followed for many families, especially those led by single mothers, added to the crisis. Drug Epidemic: The rise in illegal drug use further exacerbated homelessness, breaking down family structures and leading to financial instability. Towards a Brighter Future: Our Role We're at a critical juncture where understanding and action can truly make a difference. Here's how we can contribute to a future where homelessness is not just managed but prevented: Support Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services: Advocate for and support initiatives that provide comprehensive mental health and substance abuse treatments. Push for Affordable Housing: Engage in and support policies that promote the development and maintenance of affordable housing. Champion Job Training Programs: Support programs that provide job training and re-skilling to help individuals adapt to the changing job market. Strengthen Social Safety Nets: Advocate for robust social safety nets that can provide a buffer against economic downturns or personal crises. Final Thoughts The path to overcoming homelessness is complex but not insurmountable. By looking back at its causes and addressing them with compassion and innovation, we can pave the way for a future where everyone has a place to call home. Let's come together to make this vision a reality. Share this message, get involved, and let's be the change we wish to see. Together, we can make a difference. Pastor Steven G. Lee (April 3, 2024)
