Subject: Understanding the Disproportionate Impact of Homelessness on Native Americans (04/08/'24) -Message

Subject: Understanding the Disproportionate Impact of Homelessness on Native Americans Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some important information that highlights a significant issue facing our communities today—the disproportionate impact of homelessness on Native Americans. Despite Native Americans and Alaska Natives making up about 1% of the U.S. population, they represent approximately 3% to 4% of the total homeless population in the country. This overrepresentation is a clear indicator of the systemic challenges and inequalities faced by Native communities. Several factors contribute to this disparity, including economic instability, lack of affordable housing, limited access to healthcare, and systemic discrimination. Historical injustices, such as the loss of land and cultural trauma, further exacerbate these challenges, making it more difficult for many Native Americans to secure stable and safe living conditions. The data suggests that tens of thousands of Native Americans are experiencing homelessness, a figure that starkly contrasts with their population size. This issue requires our attention and action to ensure that all members of our communities have access to the basic needs of shelter and security. As we move forward, it's crucial that we support initiatives and policies aimed at addressing the root causes of homelessness among Native Americans. This includes advocating for affordable housing, improved healthcare access, and the recognition and rectification of historical injustices. Let's work together to raise awareness and contribute to meaningful change. Thank you for taking the time to consider this critical issue. Best regards, Pastor Steven G. Lee (April 8, 2024)
