Statement on Compassion and Neighborly Love We, as a community and individuals, are confronted with a pivotal question that tests the essence of our humanity: What defines us if we turn a blind eye to our neighbors' suffering? Drawing inspiration from the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), we are reminded that our "neighbors" are those who extend mercy towards us. Our fundamental duty transcends the mere assessment of who is deserving of our help. Our purpose is unequivocally to uplift those who have fallen, mend the spirits that have been broken, and soothe the pains that afflict the hearts of many. This is succinctly captured in the principle: "By loving God and our neighbors, we elevate ourselves through the act of lifting others." In the pursuit of our mission, we must remain vigilant against the seduction of idolatry. The human propensity to elevate trivial desires to the status of absolutes is a significant obstacle. Yet, the freedom bestowed upon us by the Gospel empowers us to break free from the shackles of idolatry and false absolutes. We are thus admonished to avoid the pitfalls of self-deification, as urged by the apostle Paul: "Flee from idolatry" (1 Corinthians 10:14). At the heart of our values lies the greatest commandment, as articulated in Luke 10:27: "To love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and to love your neighbor as yourself." This commandment not only frames our spiritual devotion but also mandates a life of empathy, compassion, and mutual respect among us. In adopting this statement, we commit to a path of love, compassion, and active support, recognizing that our collective strength and dignity are rooted in our capacity to empower, heal, and uplift each other in a world that yearns for kindness and understanding.
