The Transformative Power of the Cross: Embracing Radical Discipleship (06/19/'24)

The Transformative Power of the Cross: Embracing Radical Discipleship Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In today's world, the message of the cross has often been softened, its radical call diluted by the gentle murmurs of modern sermons. Let us reflect on the true message of the cross and the profound call to discipleship it represents. Main Body: The Divergence of Modern Preaching: If Jesus preached the same message that ministers preach today, would He ever have faced the cross? The gentle words of comfort and prosperity we often hear lack the fiery truth that once sparked revolt and redemption. The cross is not a symbol of ease but of radical love and sacrifice. The Call to Deny Ourselves: Jesus said, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves." This call is not to a life of comfort but to embrace the thorns and thistles of a path marked by sacrifice. We are called to bear our crosses daily, to follow in the steps of Jesus who walked this road before us. The Paradox of Life Through Loss: To save our lives by clinging to comfort is to lose them. The cross teaches us that true life is found in loss, in the giving up, the laying down, and the dying to self. This message is not just historical but a living call to radical discipleship. True Freedom Through Suffering: In an age where the gospel is often twisted into a promise of prosperity, we risk being blinded by a message that demands nothing and offers little in return. True freedom lies in the suffering that refines us and in the sacrifices that free our souls. The power of the cross may seem foolish to those perishing, but to us being saved, it is the power of God. Sharing in Christ's Sufferings: To know Christ is to share in His sufferings, to be molded by His death and resurrection. We are called to be crucified with Him, so it is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us. This call is not to comfort but to a life that reflects His love through every scar and act of service. Transformation Through the Cross: In embracing the cross, we find radical transformation and a life reborn in the light of sacrifice. Through daily acts of love and service, we truly follow Him. In the cross, we find the power to rise above, to heal, and to be made whole. Conclusion: The true message of the cross calls us to radical discipleship, mirroring Christ's love, sacrifice, and suffering. It is a call to live not for ourselves but for Him who died and rose again, to be living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. In the shadow of the cross, we discover our true purpose, life, and calling. Let us embrace the cross and live out its radical call in our daily lives. In Christ's Love, Pastor Steven G. Lee (June 19, 2024)
