Echoes of Stoic Wisdom in the Gospels (06/07/'24) -Message

Message: Echoes of Stoic Wisdom in the Gospels Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share some reflections on the influence of Stoicism on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, particularly focusing on the ethical and philosophical parallels. In ancient Athens, Stoics taught of virtue pure and bright. Zeno’s voice through the ages calls, in wisdom’s sacred light. Virtue stands as the highest good, with justice, courage, and grace. Temperance guides the soul within, in life’s enduring race. From Socrates, the seeds were sown, in Stoic hearts they grew. Self-examination’s path to virtues always true. In Gospel lines, these echoes found a parallel so clear, ethical teachings intertwined, in Christ’s words we revere. The Logos, rational and grand, in Stoic thought held dear, appears in John’s Gospel as the Word made flesh, the Logos now near. Providence, divine and wise, the Stoics did proclaim, in God’s great plan, the Gospels show, a vision just the same. Endurance in the face of pain, acceptance of our plight, Stoics taught with steady hearts, embracing life’s true fight. The Gospels speak of suffering; for righteousness, we stand. Blessed are the persecuted ones, held in the Savior’s hand. Through parables, both Stoic minds and Christ conveyed their lore, lessons deep in stories told, of virtues at the core. The Good Samaritan’s kind heart, in Luke’s Gospel we find, a moral tale of love and care, for all of humankind. From Athens’ ancient cradle to the hills of Galilee, the Stoic and the Christian paths, a shared philosophy. With virtue as their compass, and Logos as their guide, in harmony and wisdom, their teachings coincide. So let these echoes linger, in hearts both near and far, the Stoic flame within us, a bright and guiding star. For in the dance of reason, and virtue’s gentle sway, the Stoic and the Christian walk hand in hand today. Best regards, Pastor Steven G. Lee (June 7, 2024)
