The Silent Scars of War (06/14/'24) -Message

The Silent Scars of War Subject: Addressing Rape as a Weapon of War Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring attention to a grave issue that continues to plague conflict zones worldwide—rape as a weapon of war. Despite international laws that prohibit its use, rape remains an unchecked and rampant weapon, causing untold devastation to women, families, and entire communities. No state has ever been held accountable for employing this heinous tactic, a stark reminder of our collective failure to uphold justice. Rape is the most powerful, cost-effective weapon for destroying the lives of “enemy” women and destabilizing entire communities. It is more prevalent than any other prohibited weapon of war, including biological or chemical weapons. The failure to treat war rape with the gravity it demands removes critical protections from the victims, mainly women and girls, that the laws of war are meant to ensure. In the shadows of the battlefield, the cries of the victims go unheard, their suffering overlooked. We condemn chemical and biological weapons with ease, yet rape, more widespread and insidious, leaves us silent and inactive. It is imperative that we seek justice for those whose lives have been shattered by this inhumane act. We must ensure rightful reparation and support for the victims, acknowledging their pain and providing the necessary protections. It is time to punish states that use rape as an unlawful weapon in armed conflict, restoring hope, healing wounds, and reigniting the flame of justice. Victims of war rape deserve more than whispers and tears; they need decisive action and unwavering support. Let us acknowledge this silent weapon and work towards bringing justice to those caught in war’s obscene grasp. The silent scars of war demand our attention, compassion, and resolve. Thank you for your time and consideration. Together, we can begin to heal the deep wounds inflicted by this most heinous of crimes. Sincerely, Pastor Steven G. Lee (June 14, 2024)
